The “Riverdale” actress Camila Mendes has taken on a new role as the face of the latest release from The Chainsmokers. In the video for “Side Effects”, Mendes is seen dancing around a deserted high-end hotel after her character of Riley is told to work over the weekend by her boss. The actress takes on the central role in the promo directed by Matthew Dillon Cohen which maintains the upbeat, jovial vibe of the song.
The Chainsmokers have found themselves in a something of a darker place over recent months with their sound reflecting the moodier Winter months of the year. In recent interviews, The Chainsmokers duo of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart have explained how difficult it has been for the pair to find time to record their album and fulfill their touring duties. The duo has been on the road almost constantly since 2012 when Taggart joined Pall as a full-time member of the then New York City-based DJ outfit. Both Pall and Taggart have since relocated to California as they enjoy a Las Vegas residency each weekend and try to find the time to record their latest album, “Sick Boy.”
Over the Summer of 2017, The Chainsmokers released new music every six weeks to propel themselves into the upper echelons of the mainstream music industry. Their return in 2018 has been a little more downbeat with a new, more adult sound tied to the formation of their own live band. Releasing just five new songs over the course of 2018 has been a departure for a band more used to consistently recording and releasing music in recent years.
“Side Effects” is seen as a return to the upbeat Summer sounds of the debut album, “Memories… Do Not Open” which has been certified gold in both the U.S. and Canada. The addition of Camila Mendes to The Chainsmokers brand can only intensify the media spotlight on a DJ duo already blazing a trail for their contemporaries.
