Even with $38 million in funding, Homejoy Inc. was not able to stay on top of their business and keep pressing forward because they have now filed for bankruptcy. The bankruptcy news comes not too long after the company announced in a blog post that they would be shutting down. Homejoy Inc. is stating that one of the biggest reasons for their downfall is because of the regulations in certain areas, which want a reclassification of their workers as regular employees as opposed to being independent contractors. Having to classify someone as an employee would easily raise Homejoy’s overall worker costs tremendously, which may have ultimately led to closing the business.
Although Homejoy Inc. will no longer be in business, Handy
, a competitor, is still doing well
, especially in the home cleaning area. Many persons want their homes cleaned, especially since they have to divide their time between work, family, and chores around the home. Some simply don’t have the time to clean their homes when it’s necessary, and if a big event is coming up, it’s a good idea to get a home cleaning service in place of taking the time to do the cleaning one’s self. Handy has many certified home cleaners that are very professional
and know exactly how a home should be cleaned.
Those that work for Handy as a home cleaner have the training that brings them up to Handy’s standards as well as some experience of their own. Many home cleaners have done the work for years, so experience is not a problem. Once a family chooses to get home cleaning services, then they simply need to go to the Handy website and book the cleaning services for some time in the future. It’s possible to get someone out to clean a home just one day later, so those with time restrictions can still be assisted. Handy not only cleans homes but has many different home services that are listed on their website, and it’s a good idea for those who need any kind of work done in their home to take advantage of Handy’s services.
FreedomPop is the pioneer and most respected mobile virtual network operator. In a recent press release, it made an announcement that it would be offering discounted mobile phones and free mobile phone communication services. FreedomPop said that customers who signed up for its services through November 2015 could also pick up a Motorola E smartphone for only $40 which is a $190 discount. On the other hand, customers could also pick a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone for just $100 which is a $350 discount on its normal selling price. Although the phones were refurbished and not the very latest at the time, they included support for LTE services which is a requirement for running on Sprint’s network.
Upon buying, customers were allowed to enjoy one free month of unlimited talk time, internet and messages. After exhausting the free goodies, they were allowed to subscribe to the company’s offer of 500 megabytes of data, 500 call minutes as well as 500 text messages. The company was launched in 2012 and after a few months since the announcement was made, it expected to hit 1 million customers.
A few months before the announcement, the company had made a funding deal from Intel Capital, and it planned to use the funds to expand its smartphone portfolio. The funding came just after another $10 million investment it had received from a major mobile phone operator in the Asian region. The second funding was scheduled to enable the company start offering free mobile phone services and plans to millions of people in the Asian region.
FreedomPop, as the name suggests, is all about freedom. It is a wireless mobile phone and wireless internet service provider based in the United States. Since it started, it has been providing wireless data, text and voice services on two major mobile phone networks.
The company also made announcements that it was entering the UK market with similar services using the country’s Three mobile network. The entrance was successful and just like anticipated, the UK market embraced the new service with open arms. In the future, the company intends to enter other international markets with the same model. The company’s founders firmly believe that their model is what the whole world has been waiting for regarding cheap communication via the mobile phones. In the recent couple of years, the company has also been able to make very tremendous steps when matters related to getting funding for expansion are concerned.
In the highly competitive world of mobile service, a relatively unknown startup is making a move to capture a sizable chunk of the market by offering a highly affordable plan. The company doing this is called FreedomPop, and they have an amazing phone offer to pair with their appealing free data plan. FreedomPop is offering name brand quality mobile phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 for $100, and the Motorola E smartphone for just $40; both offers from FreedomPop are 80% below the regular market price. But their offer goes beyond just the phone; customers need a data plan too to cover actually using the phone in a meaningful way. And FreedomPop is able to provide high quality service there as well, for a price that no one can refuse. The company will set customers up with an introductory free month of unlimited voice calling, text messaging and 1 gigabyte of cellular data. Then customers will transition to their free plan of 500 megabytes of cellular data, 500 text messages and 500 calling minutes.
The way that FreedomPop can do this is because they are what’s known in the business as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator. FreedomPop buys wholesale network access from major carriers like Sprint, and resales that to attract retail customers. So they were not involved in building the network, but they were able to buy a piece of it at wholesale price and it is up to them to attract customers to use the network. That is the ultimate goal of the virtual network operator: to attract customers to the network. This could set up the company to then sell itself at a higher price down the road, when the network gets closer to full capacity.
FreedomPop launched in late 2012, and has guided estimates for 1 million customers by the end of 2015. And it looks to keep growing as it builds relationships with other operators. For instance, it has gained investment from a telecom operator that serves more than 230 million customers in Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Cambodia and Sri Lanka. FreedomPop’s plan gives it the real capability to offer a free mobile service and simple plans to millions of new mobile users. The FreedomPop CEO, Stephen Stokols, is focusing currently on tapping this exponential growth market with his company’s capability, and says in the future the company may look to pursue being acquired.
